The Courtyard Project at Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital
After months of planning and fundraising, the courtyard project at Blair E. Batson is now underway.
Members of the SHCCF and SHCCC have been sharing a vision with volunteers and the community for a revamped outdoor area for children to enjoy at Mississippi's only children's hospital. The hospital has a place with no access for children, no signage and no activities for children to enjoy. It was the vision of SHCCF VP Dawn Harris for an interactive, fun and soothing ourdoor space to allow a brief escape from the interior confinement of the hospital for children in treatment at BEB. This vision has been put to paper and now has been discussed in person with staff members at BEB.
Over $13,000 has been raised so far for the project by the SHCCF. These funds are joined by more than $30,000 in donations received from the Queen Classy Mates, a division of the Sweet Potato Queens of Jackson, Ms. Lynn Lee, President of the QCM was also present at the meeting, offering suggestions and a promise of continued support for this cause.
The hospital has recently completed a renovation to the reception area and details were discussed to allow the courtyard green space project to tie into the new improvements. Currently, patients and families follow either Iguanas or Turtles to find their way around the hospital. Soon, they will be able to follow Dragonflies to find the newly designed courtyard. A revamped entryway will allow easy access to this bright spot of fresh air and freedom for children undergoing treatment for cancer. Once in the courtyard, the children will find activities designed just for them, with wheelchair and IV pole access, fun things to see and do, and a brief escape to the outdoors.
The SHCCF has been raising funds for this much needed improvement to Mississippi's only children's hospital during 2012 and 2013. The Queen Classy Mates Sweet Potato Queens become aware of this project and have also joined in fundraising for this project. Together, these two groups plan amazing things for the children at BEB.
